The Pudong is the main hub for Shanghai Airlines and China Eastern Airlines and Air China's major International hub. Before the opening of Shanghai's Pudong International Airport, Shanghai's Hongqiao International Airport was the main airport but the open surroundings were too small for expansion.
This Shanghai's international airport takes over from the Hongqiao airport flights from Shanghai including regional flights to Macau and Hong Kong. The long term plan for the airport envisages a total of three terminals, two satellite halls and five parallel runways, for a final capacity of 100 million passengers per year.

Flights from Shanghai are all set to take off. The Shanghai airport will further gain in status with the advent of Beijing 2008 Olympics. The Hongqiao airport's planned resumption of flights in October 2007 will give a further fillip to the operations of the Shanghai airports lead by the Shanghai Pudong International Airport.
